1. What is ICNS?

ICNS is short for Internet Computer Name Service, it is built on the Internet Computer, aims to be a core component of the future Web3 ecosystem.

ICNS maps human-readable names to machine-readable crypto addresses and other customized user metadata, you will be able to participate in the IC ecosystem with your favorite unique name, Your ICNS name will be your passport to the web3 ecosystem on the Internet Computer.

2. What is WICP and how to get WICP?

WICP is the wrapped version of ICP, 1 WICP = 1 ICP, you can find details here. All payments on ICNS are settled with WICP, so you’ll have to get enough WICP before participating in name auctions.

3. ICNS names rules?

ICNS names minimum length is 3, maximum length is 63, and can only contain alphanumeric characters (lowercase letters a-z, numbers 0-9) and hyphen('-').

4. How to get an ICNS name?

You can get an ICNS name through name auction, an auction lasts for 3 days, if anyone places a bid within the last 10 minutes, the auction is automatically extended by 1 hour. If you are the final auction winner, you can claim the name, after which the name is officially yours.

5. What if I lost in an auction?

If you are outbid in an auction, your funds(WICP) will be credited to your account and you can withdraw your fund on ‘My Account’ page anytime you want. Your account balance can also be used for name registration and renewal.

e.g., your bid 1 WICP on a name, but at the end you are outbid, then the 1 WICP goes to your ICNS balance, now if you want to bid 0.5 WICP on another name, the payment is made from your ICNS balance since it is enough for the payment, but if you want to bid 2 WICP on the name, your ICNS balance is not enough, another 1 WICP will be transferred from your plug wallet to make up for the difference.

6. How to claim a reserved name?

To honor builders and projects that contributed to the IC ecosystem, we reserved a list of names for them, if you are on the list, post the following content on Twitter and we’ll assign the name to you. Names in the list are reserved for 6 months, names will be open for registration if unclaimed within the reservation period. You can find the reserved names here.

7. How to renew my ICNS name?

You can extend the name expiration on the name’s detail page, the minimum extension is 1 year. If a name expires, there is a 1 month protection period, the original owner can renew the name within this period, the name will be open for registration if not renewed within the protection period.
